Israel Intercepts Rocket Launched at Ashkelon from the Gaza Strip

April 07, 2011

Today Israel protected and defended their citizens by intercepting a hostile rocket with their newest deployed missile defense system, the Iron Dome. The Grad rocket that was shot down was aimed at the city of Ashkelon, only 10 km from the Gaza Strip. The system was deployed last week and became operationally active on Sunday. The Iron Dome system can react very quickly and be selective about which targets to intercept based on their likelihood to cause damage to human life and valued assets.

Over the past few years the United States Congress and Government have provided financial support to Israel for the development of the Iron Dome missile defense system.

This domestically developed missile defense system is a true testament to Israel’s ingenuity, determination and will to protect their citizens from rockets.
