Overview

The European Multifunction Phased Array Radar (EMPAR) is a rotating passive electronically scanning array (PESA) system that operates in the C-band. The radar provides information regarding the altitude, bearing, and distance of airborne objects within a 150 km radius.[i] With 60 rotations per minute, the radar offers a continuous 360-degree view.[ii] It has simultaneous tracking of up to 300 different targets and, in cooperation with the Principal Anti-Air Missile System (PAAMS) or the Surface-to-Air Anti-Missile System, can engage up to 12 targets at once.[iii] EMPAR can also be integrated with the Principal Anti Air Missile System (PAAMS), providing guidance to Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles which are used for medium- and long-range air defense.[iv]

Strategic Implications

The EMPAR is strategically desirable because of its ability to combine various surveillance and tracking functions into one unit. The EMPAR can conduct three-dimensional air search, as well as perform missile tracking and interceptor guidance missions. Furthermore, its ability to engage in rapid 360-degree surveillance makes it highly valuable for tracking speedy incoming airborne threats.

Timeline

October 2004: AMS announces that the EMPAR radar has reached a milestone by being integrated with an experimental Italian Navy ship called Carabiniere[v]

1995: Carabiniere enters service for EMPAR trials

December 1993: Extended trials completed, preparation for trials on frigate RIM Carabiniere[vi]

August 1993: EMPAR passes initial field tests[vii]

July 1986: NATO consortium formed for EMPAR development[viii]
