The United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has awarded Raytheon (and RTX company) to develop a working rotating detonation engine demonstrator (RDE). If achieved, the “Gambit” program should produce a more compact, higher efficiency propulsion system than conventional missile propulsion. If all goes to plan, it should also offer the potential for much lower running costs.
