Senior N. Korean official says its nuke program targets no country but U.S.

SEOUL, Nov. 26 (Yonhap) — A senior North Korean official said its nuclear weapons program targets nobody but the United States and the rest of the world does not need to feel threatened, its official newspaper reported Sunday.

“Today’s reality shows that our obtaining of nuclear (weapons) shatters the U.S. ambition to secure its supremacy in the Asia-Pacific region and safeguards peace and security on the Korean Peninsula and its region,” Ri Jong-hyok, deputy of North Korea’s Supreme People’s Assembly and director of the National Reunification Institute, was quoted as saying in his speech during the Asian Parliamentary Assembly in Turkey.

Ri visited Turkey for the forum held from Tuesday to Thursday.

“It’s Korean people’s resolute decision that (North Korea) should face off the U.S. only with nuclear (weapons) to achieve the balance of power,” Ri was quoted as saying by the Rodong Sinmun newspaper of the ruling Korean Workers’ Party.

“Our nuclear deterrence is a sword of justice aimed at fighting (U.S.) nuke and Asia and any country in the world need not worry about our threats as long as they do not join invasion and provocations toward us,” the official noted…
