On January 27, 2025, President Trump ordered the construction of an “Iron Dome for America,” characterized as a next-generation missile defense shield to protect the U.S. homeland. On May 20, President Trump held a briefing on the system now known as “Golden Dome” with the stated goal of completing the system by the end of 2029. The initial responses in the People’s Republic of China (PRC) to Golden Dome (known in Chinese as “金穹”) have been overwhelmingly negative, with Beijing raising both strategic and normative objections to the U.S. reviving its past efforts to build a strategic missile defense system. There are several PRC objections to the Golden Dome system.
