U.S. Holds Talks Over Economic, Security Arrangements With Greenland

The Trump administration is taking new steps to tighten ties with Greenland, as part of an attempt to exert more influence in the Arctic region and ice out China — the U.S.’s chief global competitor.

The U.S. and Greenland are close to finalizing deals on issues ranging from new security and diplomatic cooperation to trade and investment initiatives, a senior diplomatic official said on Wednesday. The pending agreements were the subject of high-level discussions between officials from the U.S., Greenland, and Denmark on Wednesday, the official said.

Mr. Trump has expressed interest in purchasing Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory between the North Atlantic and Arctic oceans, for its strategic location, rare earth minerals, and other assets, but was rebuffed last year when Denmark said that it wasn’t for sale.

But, as China endeavors to make investments and forge security arrangements with Greenland and around the region, the U.S. has sought out other ways to more-closely align itself with the world’s biggest island. Greenland, U.S. officials said, is wary of such moves by the Chinese…
