KTUU:

ANCHORAGE (KTUU) – A future Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer is set to be named after the late U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens.

The Alaska Congressional Delegation on Friday announced that Secretary of the Navy Richard V. Spencer decided a new ship will become a namesake vessel in honor of Sen. Stevens, who served Alaska from 1968 to 2009.

The USS Ted Stevens (DDG 128), which has yet to be built, will be capable of fighting air, surface and subsurface battles simultaneously, according to Sen. Dan Sullivan’s office.

“The ship will contain a combination of offensive and defensive weapon systems designed to support maritime warfare,” officials wrote in a release Friday, “including integrated air and missile defense and vertical launch capabilities.”
