Defense Secretary James Mattis said Thursday that there will be “strong military consequences” for North Korea should it take military action against the U.S. or its allies, a direct rebuttal to White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who said in an interview earlier this week that “there’s no military solution” to deal with North Korea’s nuclear weapons program.
“I just can assure you that, in close collaboration with our allies, there are strong military consequences if the [Democratic People’s Republic of Korea] initiates hostilities,” Mattis said Thursday at a joint news conference with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and their Japanese counterparts. Tillerson, asked about Bannon’s statements, said he had read them but declined to comment.
