Hans G. Klemm has presented his credentials to Romania’s president to take up his post as U.S. Ambassador to Romania.
Klemm, a career diplomat who is Washington’s first ambassador to Romania since December 2012, was previously ambassador to East Timor from 2007 to 2010.
He met Romanian Foreign Minister Bogdan Aurescu Monday and they discussed a U.S.-led missile defense shield that will become functional this year in the southern Romanian town of Deveselu and aims to protect NATO members from attacks.
They also discussed the U.S. visa waiver program. Romanians currently need visas to travel to the U.S.
Klemm later presented his credentials to President Klaus Iohannis in a short ceremony. Iohannis visits the U.S. this week.
Romania and the U.S. are celebrating 135 years of diplomatic relations this year.
