Study: Missile Defense System Would Create Hundreds Of Jobs At Fort Drum

If Fort Drum becomes the East Coast home of a missile defense system, it will mean hundreds of new jobs and millions of dollars for the north country’s economy.

That’s the conclusion of a just-released study released by the U.S. Department of Defense Missile Defense Agency.

Fort Drum is one of three possible locations for an East Coast missile defense site.

Missile defense is aimed at shooting down incoming enemy missiles with a ground-based missile of our own.

The study examines the project’s impact on things like air quality, health and safety, noise and socioeconomics.

A powerful backer of Fort Drum quickly weighed in on the study.

“Our office is currently reviewing the report. Should this report determine that a new system on the East Coast is necessary, workable and cost effective, Fort Drum is uniquely capable for the job,” said Jason Kaplan, a spokesman for U.S. Senator Charles Schumer
