MDA solicits industry input on new booster for GMD missile shield

The US Missile Defense Agency (MDA) has asked industry for feedback regarding the possible development and delivery of a new booster for the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) counter-missile programme.

MDA is aiming for a 50-inch diameter, multi-stage solid rocket motor boost vehicle (BV) designed carry a kinetic exoatmospheric ‘kill vehicle’ (EKV) to a point where the vehicle would separate and strike and destroy an incoming ballistic missile threat. The agency would like such a booster by 2021, it said in a 26 April posting in Federal Business Opportunities .

The booster and EKV comprise the missile defence system’s Ground-Based Interceptor (GBI), which has suffered a variety of testing failures and scored 9 successful intercepts in 17 attempts since 1999…
