MDA announces GMD EIS public meetings in Michigan

The Missile Defense Agency today announced plans to hold a pair of public, open-house meetings on June 21 and June 23 in Michigan to discuss the environmental impact of basing a Ground-based Mid-course Defense interceptor site at Ft. Custer Training Center in that state.

On May 31, MDA released a draft version of the Continental United States Interceptor Site Environmental Impact Statement — a 1,702-page document — prepared to comply with a provision of the Fiscal Year 2013 National Defense Authorization Act. As Inside Defense reported earlier this month:

Proponents of the provision, largely congressional Republicans, argue that adding an East Coast site to the Ground-based Interceptors currently fielded in Alaska and California would bolster defense of the nation against North Korean and possibly Iranian long-range ballistic missile threats.
