Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE: LMT) secured a $519 million contract Wednesday to provide Spain with sensor and radar equipment for five frigates using its Aegis Combat System (ACS).

The ACS is an advanced computer-enabled command and control and weapons system that has been utilized by the U.S. Navy and foreign allies for decades. It uses a combination of computer and radar systems to track and destroy adversary targets and missiles.

The 10-year contract calls for the Bethesda defense giant to provide Aegis fire control loop — the functions and processes used by the ACS to intercept a target — tools, test equipment and spares for “five new multi-mission frigates.”

The contract will provide the tools on the Baseline 9C.2 version of the ACS, a modernized variant of the system that includes the Lockheed Martin multi-mission signal processor and allows the ships to switch between ballistic missile defense and air defense modes.
