Leonardo Demos Outstanding Ballistic Missile Defence Capabilities Performed by its MFRA Radar At Exercise Formidable Shield 2019

During the US Navy-led multinational exercise Formidable Shield 2019, Leonardo’s MFRA (Multi-Function Radar Active) system was used by the Italian Navy to successfully detect, classify and track ballistic missiles. Installed on-board the Navy’s Carlo Bergamini FREMM-class frigate, the radar system demonstrated exceptional accuracy, confirming its suitability for anti-ballistic missile defence.

Formidable Shield 2019, which took place in the UK’s Hebrides Islands, involved Navies from Italy, Canada, France, the Netherlands, Spain, Norway, Denmark, the United Kingdom and the United States. During the exercise, naval units from multiple nations worked together simultaneously to defend against threats ranging from anti-ship missiles, flying tens of metres above the sea, to ballistic missiles hundreds of kilometres away.
