The Maya is JMSDF’s seventh Aegis ship, a state-of-the-art destroyer that was just commissioned in March 2020.The capability test that will be conducted is an evaluation that vessels are required to conduct within one year of their commissioning, according to JMSDF regulations. The tests include checking the seaworthiness and maneuverability of the ship in rough weather conditions, as well as try outs of the armament and equipment on board the vessel.

JS Maya is the first JMSDF Aegis ship to be equipped with Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) capability from the design stage, as well as Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) to share information with other vessels and aircraft in real time. In addition to this ability test, JMSDF’s Aegis ships have been conducting qualification tests of their onboard equipment off the coast of Hawaii for generations, and the Maya‘s combat systems, including BMD capability, are likely to be tested here in the future.
