Japan commissions 8th Aegis destroyer

Japan has commissioned a new Aegis destroyer, bringing the total fleet size to eight as called for in the nation’s defense program guidelines.

The vessel Haguro was handed over from its builder to the Maritime Self-Defense Force at a wharf in Isogo, Yokohama City, on Friday.

Haguro is equipped with a system for sharing real-time location data of missiles and aircraft with the US military.

The vessel is also due to carry a new type of interceptor missile being developed by Japan and the US to further advance the two countries’ interoperability…
