The Huntsville office of large defense contractor Boeing has been awarded an additional billion dollars for work on America’s ballistic missile defense system, according to a Pentagon release.
The modification is for $1.088 billion, and brings to the total award to more than $5 billion for work on the Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD) system. That’s the system that uses Alaska and California-based interceptor missiles to shoot down incoming missiles in space. While the system has faced some issues, it’s often described as America’s homeland defense. It is operated by soldiers overseen by Redstone Arsenal’s Space and Missile Defense Command.
The modification is for work on the kill vehicle, which is the portion of the interceptor that actually intercepts the incoming ballistic missile. The Missile Defense Agency is seeking to integrate a new version, known as the Redesigned Kill Vehicle (RKV) and according to the release, Boeing will work to develop the RKV, integrate it onto a missile and perform flight testing.
