WWMT:
Right now, Battle Creek is a top contender to host a multi-billion dollar missile defense system.
It’s a story we’ve been covering every step of the way, and tonight Newschannel 3 is hearing the race to the White House will have implications for the future of the base.
Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow says Fort Custer, near Battle Creek, appears to top the short list to locate a new missile defense system.
Right now only two other locations are being looked at.
The $3 billion missile system would safeguard eastern U.S. cities from long range missile attacks.
Tonight, Stabenow says Fort Custer is working through environmental assessments to host the defense system.
“It’s a great site. Our people are very talented. It would be a wonderful place from a jobs stand point, so we are crossing our fingers,” she said.
We’re expecting to hear which location will get the green light by the end of the year or early next year.
This is when the real battle for the base begins.
