In recognition of the increasingly critical role of Missile Defense in the Indo-Pacific region, we are honored to announce MajGen (Ret.) Joaquin F. Malavet as MDAA’s Senior Fellow for Indo-Pacific Affairs.  Joaquin will serve as Special Advisor to the Board and MDAA’s Ambassador for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs — focusing on the strategic issues and innovations across Policy, Strategy, and Campaigning designs.  Significantly, his concentrations and contributions will include the strategic challenges that reside within the first and second island chains – especially across the economic-security-technology nexus.

Joaquin served with distinction during a 34 year career in the United States Marine Corps, most recently as the Director for Strategic Plans and Policy, USINDOPACOM J-5.  As the Director, he focused on strategic campaigning and the analysis of military plans, making Joaquin one of the nation’s foremost experts on US Military strategy vis-a-vis China, Russia, and North Korea in the Indo-Pacific.  He brings combat experience as a Naval Aviator, having flown the CH-53D/E Assault Support helicopters and other aviation platforms across the INDOPACOM, EUCOM, and CENTCOM AORs.

MajGen Malavet attended the Naval War College’s College of Naval Command and Staff, graduating with a Master in National Security and Strategic Studies.  As a Commandant of the Marine Corps Fellow, he also attended the Johns Hopkins University – the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and earned a Masters of International Public Policy with a concentration in Asia-Pacific security affairs.

Since his retirement from the Marine Corps, Joaquin serves as a Senior Fellow for the Center for Naval Analysis, and as a consultant for the Institute for Defense Analysis (IDA).  He is also the Founder and President of Joaquin F. Malavet and Associates LLC (DBA Strong Eagles Eye).

The Malavet Family is truly an Indo-Pacific family with deep and extended familial roots in both the Philippines and India.  Joaquin and his wife, Rose, were married in the Philippines.  From these familial roots and his broadly experienced military-statesmanship across the Indo-Pacific, he understands the politics, the people, and the power of freedom and openness to serve national security interests.  We are honored to add Joaquin to our team to better enable our mission and advocacy.

Mission Statement

MDAA’s mission is to make the world safer by advocating for the development and deployment of missile defense systems to defend the United States, its armed forces and its allies against missile threats.

MDAA is the only organization in existence whose primary mission is to educate the American public about missile defense issues and to recruit, organize, and mobilize proponents to advocate for the critical need of missile defense. We are a non-partisan membership-based and membership-funded organization that does not advocate on behalf of any specific system, technology, architecture or entity.
