Rep. Doug Lamborn and Riki Ellison addressing the USC Shield 23 Program - Rayburn House Office Building - Washington D.C. - January 26, 2023.

We opened this new year with our USC SHIELD ‘23 program here, in our Nation’s Capital. We had the honor of engaging with the New Chairman of the Strategic Forces Subcommittee for the House Arms Service Committee (HASC), Rep. Doug Lamborn at the Rayburn House Office Building, Washington D.C. The Cohort presented their six course challenge capstone statements, details, solutions and ways forward. Congressman Lamborn engaged with them on each capstone and highly anticipates the final products due in April of this year.

Following the discussion with the New Chairman, the USC SHIELD Cohort met with the minority party HASC Committee Professional Staffer, Ms. Maria Vastola who provided a rigorous question and answer segment regarding how war fighting requirements are being supported by the legislative processes and policy.

The Cohort then moved from the legislative policy side at Congress to the Pentagon where they heard perspectives from civilian and military leaders within policy and engineering DoD challenges. Important and high level speakers included Dr. John Plumb Asst. Secretary of Defense for Space Policy,  Mr. John Hill Deputy Asst. Secretary of Defense for Space and Missile Defense, Maj Gen Steve Whitney USSF, Military Deputy Office of the Asst. Secretary of the Air Force for Space Acquisition and Integration. Brig. General Paul Murray USAF,  Deputy Director of Operations, HQ NORAD, and Ms. Laura DeSimone, Executive Director Missile Defense Agency.

The conversation and engagement regarding space and missile defense policy and acquisition in relation to our nation’s and partner’s national defense was substantive and illuminating for the Cohort and the leaders they engaged.

A great day in the National Capital Region.
