The U.S. Department of State has detailed recent measures to bolster its missile defense to account for growing threats from states like North Korea and Iran.
Speaking in Madrid, Frank A. Rose Assistant Secretary of State for Arms Control, Verification and Compliance, outlined the Obama Administration’s recent steps to counter DPRK Inter Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) launches.
“(The) Administration announced it would deploy an additional 14 Ground-Based Interceptors (or GBIs), increasing the total number to 44 by 2017. This deployment will ensure that we stay ahead of the new road-mobile ICBM threat from North Korea,” Rose said.
Rose also said upgrades to current systems were including radars and GBI’s were in development.
The U.S. has been working with its allies to improve its ICBM defense network, highlighting improvements and aid from several allies, including Romania, Poland and Spain.
“Coming from the State Department, as opposed to the Defense Department, these remarks highlight the importance of the relationships between the U.S. and its allies in Washington’s missile defense and counter-proliferation strategies, and vice versa,” NK News Director of Intelligence John Grisafi said…
