US urges Gulf allies to bolster anti-Iran ‘drone fleet’

US navy officials are attempting to convince their remaining allies in West Asia to “add dozens more robot vessels around the Arabian Peninsula” to better counter Iranian “threats,” according to Saudi-owned news outlet Asharq al-Awsat.

According to the commander of the Bahrain-based US Fifth Fleet, Vice Admiral Brad Cooper, the Pentagon wants to have more than 100 unmanned surface vehicles in operation by the end of the summer as part of its “anti-Iran” fleet.

The fifth fleet encompasses the critical Strait of Hormuz, the tiny mouth of the Persian Gulf through which 20 percent of the world’s oil supply travels.
