The secretary of the Army has approved the selection of Julie Schumacher for the position of deputy to the commander for Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command.
Schumacher, a member of the Senior Executive Service since November 2011, has served as the acting deputy to the commander since October and will immediately assume her new responsibilities.
As the senior civilian in the command, she provides leadership for the Army’s space and missile defense programs, acquisition support, personnel and resource management.
Schumacher joined SMDC/ARSTRAT in November 2013 as the director of the Technical Center. In this position, she was responsible for managing research, development and test programs for space, missile defense, cyber, directed energy and related technologies. She was also responsible for the management of the Ronald Reagan Ballistic Missile Defense Test Site in the Marshall Islands.
Before joining SMDC, Schumacher served as the deputy director for test for the Missile Defense Agency, where she was responsible for supporting strategic planning, management and execution of the Ballistic Missile Defense System test program including flight and ground testing, and war games and exercises.
She earned a bachelor’s of science from the University of Alabama and a master’s in industrial and systems engineering from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. She has completed the Senior Executive Fellows Program at the Harvard Kennedy School of Government, APEX Senior Executive Service course, the Program Manager’s Course at the Defense Acquisition University, and is Level III-certified in program management, test and evaluation, and systems engineering.
