FAIRBANKS — The missile defense base near Delta Junction has funding for an additional two missile interceptors under the military construction budget signed into law last month, according to the office of Rep. Don Young.
The additional $8 million will bring the missile interceptor count to 62 at Fort Greely within the next five years, said Murphy McCollough, a spokeswoman for Alaska’s lone representative.
The federal government has made major, although sporadic, investments at Fort Greely since the former cold weather testing base received its missile defense mission in 2003. The pace of construction has accelerated since 2013, when North Korea began a series of missile tests that continued until November 2017.
