Thursday satellite launch aims to bolster missile defense

In the wake of Hawaii’s weekend missile warning scare, the Air Force is preparing to deploy a new satellite to spot incoming threats.

The mission, weather permitting, will be launched from Florida’s Cape Canaveral at 5:52 p.m. MST Thursday. If successful, the satellite will bring the military’s new early warning system fully online.

“Adding the fourth satellite to the constellation allows us to provide worldwide coverage,” explained Col. Dennis Bythewood, remote sensing systems director. The satellite is a cornerstone of the Space Based Infra Red System approved in 1996.
