President Obama aboard the USS Ross in Rota, Spain on July 10

Dear Members and Friends,

” For more than 60 years, Spain has hosted Americans here at Rota. Today, this base is home to more than 3,000 Americans. And it’s the home port of American Destroyers that strengthen our alliance’s new missile defense.”

–President Barack Obama, July 10th, Rota, Spain on board the USS Ross (DDG 71).

The U.S. President went aboard and spoke with the Captain and crew of the USS Ross, one of the four Aegis Ballistic Missile Destroyers deployed to Rota, Spain. The USS Ross is a first generation upgraded 3.6 Aegis Destroyer with a SPY-1 S-band radar, and 90 Vertical Launch Tubes of which some are filled with SM-3 Block IA and IB missile interceptors. Last year, the USS Ross was infamously buzzed by a Russian Su-24 Fencer at a distance of 500 meters while on station at the Black Sea (Click here for a link to the video).
These four U.S. Aegis BMD Ships–to include the USS Ross–out of Rota were declared operational by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Friday, July 8th to defend NATO Europe from ballistic missiles under NATO Command and NATO Control (Click here for a link to an article from Reuters).
