U.S. seeks deal with N. Korea on normalized ties, denuclearization

SEOUL–The United States is seeking a comprehensive agreement in which North Korea completely abandons its nuclear weapons and missile programs in exchange for diplomatic relations, but Pyongyang apparently wants more, sources said.

Officials of the two nations have held a number of secret meetings to set the table for a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un probably in late May or early June, according to several sources knowledgeable about U.S.-North Korea ties.

According to U.S. government sources, Washington has confirmed directly from North Korean officials that Kim is agreeable toward the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.
