DUBAI—Saudi air defenses shot down ballistic missiles fired at the country’s capital and a city along its southern border with Yemen, according to Saudi officials, who blamed Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen.
Residents in Riyadh heard loud booms late Saturday night as Saudi defenses intercepted at least one ballistic missile, the officials said. Saudi defenses also shot down at least one missile fired at Jizan, a Saudi city near Yemen, they added.
Two people in a residential Riyadh neighborhood were slightly injured by falling shrapnel, according to the official Saudi news agency.
Saudi officials said the missiles were fired by Houthi fighters in Yemen, where the kingdom has been ensnared in a five-year-old war. The attack came one day after Saudi and Houthi officials publicly embraced a call from the United Nations for a cease-fire amid the global coronavirus pandemic.
On Friday, the Saudi-led military coalition said it brought down a Houthi drone launched at two other cities in southwestern Saudi Arabia from Yemen.
Saturday’s attack could be the first time that militants have used ballistic missiles to target Riyadh since July 2019.
