Senate passes Defense budget bill to stave off shutdown

December 20, 2019

Washington Business Journal:

Following the charged conflict around Wednesday’s contentious impeachment vote in the House, the Senate advanced spending bills Thursday to fund the government through the rest of fiscal 2020.

The Defense omnibus bill, HR 1158, passed by a vote of 81-11, providing $695 billion for the Department of Defense before federal funding runs out on Friday night and staving off a potential government shutdown.

The legislation, which passed the House on Tuesday, offers government contractors with spending clarity for several ongoing programs, including a combined $23.9 billion for a series of shipbuilding projects tied to local companies such as General Dynamics Corp. (NYSE: GD), as well as aircraft and missile programs that touch on the work of Lockheed Martin Corp. (NYSE: LMT) and others.
