KBS World Radio:
South Korea, the U.S. and Japan will jointly hold, for the first time, a missile defense exercise that will focus on detecting and tracking North Korean missiles.
Seoul’s Defense Ministry said Monday that the three countries will carry out the drill in waters near Hawaii on Tuesday.
The three countries will each mobilize one Aegis destroyer for the drill that will simulate actions to be taken in the event the North launches missiles.
Once the U.S. sends up an aircraft as a simulated target, the Aegis destroyers will each detect and track it as well as share the missile’s trajectory via a U.S. command center located on the ground.
At the upcoming exercise, South Korea, the U.S. and Japan will set up a separate network and share intelligence. However, in line with a 2014 accord, South Korea and Japan will not share data directly with each other and only exchange intelligence with the U.S.
