COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – A missile alert sounded at the North American Aerospace Defense Command and United States Northern Command headquarters Thursday morning during a scheduled interview with the Secretary of Homeland Security.

An 11 News crew was at the headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base when three loud beeps followed by a barrage of phone calls sounded through the room. Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen was cut off mid-sentence. U.S. Air Force Gen. Terrence O’Shaughnessy confirmed the noise was a missile alert.

“We have sensors all over the globe that trigger if there’s a missile event,” he said. “The team behind us is actually quantifying that event and determining if it’s actually a threat to the homeland.”

Later in the day, an Air Force spokesperson told 11 News the missile was never a threat to the United States. It was launched from somewhere in the Middle East, targeting somewhere else in the Middle East.
