Guam Guardsmen stand ready to defend missile system

Guam Army National Guard personnel will take over security for an anti-ballistic missile defense system at Andersen Air Force Base. The site is seen as a key to the island’s defense against potential aggression by North Korea.

The Terminal High Altitude Area Defense System known as a THAAD was first deployed to Andersen about five years ago in response to the growing missile threats by Pyong Yang. It is one of our last lines of defense and is capable of shooting down missiles aimed at Guam. It will be the guardsmen’s job to maintain security at the site.

“We’ve actually been preparing for quite some time now. Several months, several sacrifice days and weeks that the soldiers have already partaken to prepare themselves,” Lt. Chavez Leonen, who is in charge of the group, said. “At this point in time, it’s basically a validation that we can do the mission. And we’re confident that we can.”
