The Chosunilbo:
The government plans to ensure that the U.S. base of a Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense battery in southwestern Korea is finally run like any ordinary military installation. The move coincides with U.S. President Joe Biden’s visit to Korea on Friday.
Access to the base in Seongju, North Gyeongsang Province, which is by a single road, has been blocked by local protesters since 2017, meaning supplies have to be airlifted in and personnel have no proper facilities. They have sometimes been forced to live on field rations, while power for the battery comes from a generator.
“Normalizing operation of the THADD base is a symbolic step to bring Korea’s alliance with the U.S. back to normal,” a senior government source here said Thursday. “The government is considering various ways to put things on a normal footing as soon as possible.”
