The current version of the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, known as New START, is the most important arms control agreement to which the U.S. is party.

It limits the number of deployed long range nuclear warheads and launchers that America and Russia can have to a small fraction of those existing at the height of the Cold War, and in the process deprives either side of the ability to mount a disarming first strike.

New START is the closest we are likely to come to nuclear stability in our time. The last thing Washington needs to do is take steps that would undermine the treaty’s limits—which may stay in force through 2026 if both sides decide to extend it.
