NATO Defense Ministers Weigh Responses to Russian Missile Threat

BRUSSELS—At a recent NATO meeting on a new Russian cruise-missile system that has undermined a Cold War-era arms treaty, the Polish ambassador turned to his counterparts from Western Europe and said: “Welcome to the club.”

Countries on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s eastern flank have long been in range of Russian short-range missiles. Now Russia’s deployment of new 9M729 missiles is forcing larger members in Western Europe to recognize that Moscow has gained a dangerous military edge.
