Background
Romania is a member of the North
Atlantic Treaty Organization since 2004. As a relative newcomer the country was
quick to participate actively in the allied operations.
Current Development
In February 2009 the Romanian
Supreme Defense Council agreed to host U.S. missile defense interceptors. The formal
invitation to participate on the “New Missile Defense Architecture” came from President Barack Hussein Obama himself. The decision now needs to be
approved by the Romanian Parliament and concrete steps need to be further
negotiated.
