Top nuclear envoys of S. Korea, U.S. to meet in Seoul this week

SEOUL, Oct. 15 (Yonhap) — The top nuclear envoys of South Korea and the United States will hold talks in Seoul this week to discuss joint efforts to address persistent nuclear and missile threats from North Korea, a diplomatic source said Sunday.

Lee Do-hoon, the special representative for Korean Peninsula peace and security affairs at Seoul’s foreign ministry, will meet his U.S. counterpart, Joseph Yun late this week for the first time since Lee was appointed last month.

Yun will visit Seoul to accompany Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan, who will meet his South Korean counterpart Lim Sung-nam for a “strategic dialogue” here Wednesday ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump’s visit to Seoul slated for early next month.

At the top of the agenda for the Lee-Yun talks are expected to be North Korea-related issues, including the possibility of additional provocations and how to further tighten the screw on the North through sanctions and diplomatic pressure…
