Taipei, Sept. 1 (CNA) A unit of Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3) air defense missiles was put on display in Taipei Thursday as part of a military exhibition, the first time that the weapon system has entered the capital city.
This means that in the event of a missile attack in the future, the PAC-3 can be deployed in Taipei to protect the government’s headquarters.
Shao Yi-wei (邵毅維), an officer at the Ministry of National Defense’s Air Defense Missile Command, explained that the PAC-3 is an air defense system designed to counter theater ballistic missiles, with its interception distance and altitude reaching up to 70 km and 24.4 km, respectively.
The system can effectively counter cruise missiles, unmanned aerial vehicles and anti-radiation missiles, Shao said, adding that it is highly mobile and is equipped with electronic counter-countermeasures.
The exhibition was held at the Chiang Kai-Shek Memorial Hall to mark the upcoming Armed Forces Day on Sept. 3.
Other weapons on display also included the Tien Kung I (Sky Bow I) surface-to-air missile, the Thunderbolt-2000 multiple rocket launch system, the M3 Amphibious Rig, the Avenger air defense system and the CM-32 “Clouded Leopard” armored vehicle.
