Development

Agni IV is a medium to intermediate range ballistic missile developed indigenously by India. It is solid-fueled and has a range of over 3,500 km. The missile is also rail mobile. [1] The missile is also designed to carry a payload of 1,000 kg. [2] Agni IV has been flight tested twice since 2010 with only one successful test. [3] Another test came in November of 2011, which successfully tested the Agni IV at its 3,500 km range and 1,000 kg payload.[4] There is some speculation that Agni IV is not meant for operational deployment but was instead designed a technology demonstrator between the Agni-III and Agni V. [5] As of 2013, U.S. military analysts categorizes the Agni-IV as not yet deployed. [6] However, the Agni-IV was successfully test fired in January 2014. [7]

Strategic Implications

The range of the Agni VI would enable it to strike all of Pakistan and, if correctly positioned, western and southwestern China. One of the critical factors in this situation is that if the technology created or enhanced for the Agni-IV can be developed into the Agni-V.  This would include improved guidance and stabilization systems. [8] As of 2014, it is unknown if Agni IV technology has been incorporated into the Agni V. [9]
