Riki Ellison & Early Missile Defense Visionaries
MDAA founder Riki Ellison is introduced to missile defense through Dr. William Van Cleave and Dr. Edward Teller, pioneers in strategic defense and critical academic thinking.
Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative
On March 23, President Ronald Reagan announces the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), calling on American scientists to make nuclear weapons “impotent and obsolete.”
Early Atmospheric Defense Research
Riki Ellison contributes to work on atmospheric defense system generational prototypes, advancing early missile defense concepts.
Patriot Enters Combat
During Operation Desert Storm, the U.S. Army Patriot missile system is used in combat for the first time, engaging Iraqi Scud missiles over Saudi Arabia and Israel.
MDAA Founded
Established to advocate for missile defense systems protecting America and allies. The U.S. withdraws from the ABM Treaty and U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) is established. President Bush signs NSPD-23 directing deployment of ground-based missile defense systems.
First GMD Deployment
Ground-based Midcourse Defense system becomes operational at Fort Greely, Alaska.
THAAD Operational
Terminal High Altitude Area Defense achieves initial operational capability.
Aegis Ashore Romania
The Aegis Ashore missile defense site in Deveselu, Romania becomes operational as part of NATO's European Phased Adaptive Approach.
Space Force Established
U.S. Space Force becomes the newest branch, enhancing missile warning capabilities.
THAAD’s First Combat Intercept
On January 17, THAAD makes its first real-world intercept, destroying an incoming Houthi ballistic missile in the United Arab Emirates.
Aegis Ashore Poland & THAAD in Israel
NATO's Aegis Ashore site in Redzikowo, Poland becomes operational. THAAD is deployed to Israel, intercepting Houthi ballistic missiles.
Golden Dome Initiative
President Trump signs an executive order directing development of the Golden Dome, a multi-layered missile defense shield to protect the U.S. homeland.
